Here’s something most people don’t realise: the gate is the part of a pool fence that fails a safety inspection more than anything else. The fence panels rarely move — but a gate that doesn’t swing fully shut, or a latch that misses, is what puts a child at risk and what an inspector picks up first. That’s why we treat the pool gate as the most important part of the whole barrier.
We install and repair frameless glass and aluminium pool gates right across the Sunshine Coast — set up so they close and latch on their own, every time, built to the Queensland pool safety standard.
What makes a pool gate compliant?
A compliant pool gate isn’t just a gate in a fence. In Queensland it has to do four things, every time, without anyone thinking about it:
- Self-close from any position — whether it’s wide open or only slightly ajar, it must swing fully shut on its own.
- Self-latch as it closes, so it locks itself without needing a push or a slam.
- Open outward, away from the pool.
- Have the latch release at least 1500mm above the ground, out of a small child’s reach, with no gap over 100mm anywhere around it.
Get any one of those wrong and the barrier fails — no matter how good the fence is. This is the detail we get right.
Glass pool gates
A frameless glass pool gate matches a glass pool fence seamlessly — the same clear 12mm toughened panel, so the gate almost disappears into the run. It swings on marine-grade 316 stainless steel self-closing hinges with a stainless latch up top. If you have or want a glass pool fence, a matching glass gate keeps that clean, see-through look all the way around.
Aluminium pool gates
An aluminium pool gate is the tough, budget-friendly choice, and it pairs perfectly with an aluminium pool fence. We hang a powder-coated flat-top gate with self-closing hinges and a magnetic self-latching latch, in marine-grade finishes that stand up to the coastal salt air. Same safety, friendlier price.
Self-closing and self-latching: how it actually works
Two bits of hardware do all the work. The self-closing hinges hold a spring that pulls the gate shut on its own — the spring tension is adjustable, which is what lets us tune the gate to close firmly but not slam. The self-latching latch (often a magnetic one on aluminium gates) catches automatically as the gate meets the post, so it locks itself. When these two are set correctly and kept in good order, the gate is safe. When the spring tires or the gate drops out of line, that’s when problems start — which brings us to repairs.
Pool gate repairs and adjustments
If your pool gate has stopped closing or latching properly, you’re not alone — it’s the most common pool safety call-out we get, and it’s usually a quick fix. The gate itself is almost always fine; it’s the hardware that’s tired.
- Won’t close fully: the spring in the self-closing hinges has lost tension, or the gate has dropped — we re-tension or replace the hinges and realign it.
- Won’t latch: the latch is worn or out of alignment with the gate — we adjust or replace it so it catches every time.
- Rusty hinges or latch: low-grade hardware corrodes near the coast — we swap it for marine-grade 316 stainless.
- Slams or bounces: the hinge spring is set too strong — we adjust it so it closes firmly and quietly.
A failed gate is a real safety risk, so it’s worth fixing quickly. Most repairs are done in a single visit.
Pool gate rules in Queensland
Pool gates are covered by the same Queensland standard as the rest of the barrier (MP3.4 / AS1926.1). The gate-specific rules are the self-close, self-latch, outward-swing and 1500mm latch-height points above, plus the general 1200mm minimum height and the no-gap-over-100mm rule. We build and set every gate to meet these.
Our pool gate installation process
- Free measure & quote. We look at the opening, talk through glass or aluminium, and give you a clear price.
- Hang the gate. The gate is fitted on marine-grade self-closing hinges, plumb and square, with correct gaps.
- Set the latch. The self-latching latch is fitted at the compliant height and aligned to catch cleanly.
- Tune & test. We adjust the spring tension and test the gate from every position — wide open, half open, barely ajar — until it closes and latches every time.
- Compliance check. The finished gate is checked against MP3.4 / AS1926.1, ready for a pool safety inspection.

We install and repair glass and aluminium pool gates throughout the Sunshine Coast — Caloundra, Maroochydore, Mooloolaba, Buderim, Noosa and everywhere between. Need the fence too? See our glass pool fencing and aluminium pool fencing, or browse our recent projects.
Pool gate FAQ
Do pool gates have to be self-closing and self-latching?
Yes. In Queensland every pool gate must close and latch by itself, from any position you leave it in — wide open or just ajar. It also has to swing outward, away from the pool. A gate that you have to push shut, or that only latches sometimes, is the single most common reason a pool fails its safety check. That is exactly why the gate is the part we set up most carefully.
How high does a pool gate latch have to be?
The latch release must sit at least 1500mm (1.5 metres) above the ground, so a small child can’t reach up and open it. If the release is lower than that, it has to be shielded so little hands can’t get to it. We set every gate latch to the correct height as part of the install.
Why won’t my pool gate close or latch properly?
Almost always it’s the hinges. Self-closing pool gate hinges use a spring that loses tension over time, or the gate drops slightly out of alignment, so it no longer swings fully shut or the latch misses. This is a quick fix — we re-tension or replace the spring hinges and realign the gate so it closes and latches every time. You rarely need a whole new gate.
Can you repair a glass pool gate, or only replace it?
We repair. Most gate problems are the hardware, not the glass — worn hinges, a tired spring, or a latch that needs adjusting or replacing. We swap those for marine-grade 316 parts and re-set the gate. If the glass panel itself is cracked or chipped we can replace just that panel. See our glass pool fence repairs page for more.
What size is a glass pool gate?
Most glass pool gates use a single panel roughly 780mm to 1000mm wide, and at least 1200mm tall to meet the height rule. We measure your opening and size the gate and hinges to suit, so it swings freely and latches cleanly without a gap over 100mm.
How much does a pool gate cost?
It depends on whether you want a frameless glass gate or an aluminium one, and the hardware you choose. A gate on its own is a small job; most people add or replace one as part of a fence. Either way we give you a free, itemised quote so you can see the price before you decide.
