Baringa is home for us — the business is based right here in the Aura estate — so this was a project a couple of streets away, not a couple of suburbs. A raised deck off the living area needed a compliant balustrade to guard the drop, but the owners didn’t want a bulky railing chopping up the space and the outlook they’d built the deck for.

A frameless glass balustrade was the perfect answer: a barrier that meets the code for a raised edge, with sightlines you can see straight through.

The site

The deck sat high enough that a compliant barrier was required to guard the fall. Two things shaped the job: the glass had to be the right grade and thickness to carry the barrier loads set by the National Construction Code, and the fixings had to be set into the deck structure to hold that load rigidly for the long term. Because it’s a showpiece edge, we specified low-iron glass so the panels read crystal-clear rather than green-tinged.

What we installed

We installed 12mm toughened low-iron safety glass in frameless panels on slim, polished marine-grade 316 stainless steel spigots, set into the deck structure and spaced to meet the barrier requirements. The result is a continuous glass edge with minimal hardware on show — safe, compliant, and almost invisible.

Slim 316 stainless spigots — enough hardware to carry the load, little enough to keep the glass the hero.

The installation process

  1. Measure & planA full site measure and set-out of the balustrade line and spigot spacing to suit the barrier loads before any glass was ordered.
  2. Fix the spigotsPolished 316 stainless spigots fixed into the deck structure for a rigid, load-rated base.
  3. Set the panelsLow-iron glass panels lifted in, plumbed and locked, kept to a clean, dead-level top line.
  4. Check & detailGaps, fixings and stability checked, then the glass cleaned down to a streak-free finish.
  5. Final compliance checkThe finished balustrade checked against AS1288 and the NCC barrier requirements.

Challenges we solved

A raised edge like this has to carry real load, so the whole spec — glass thickness, spigot grade and spacing, and how they’re fixed into the deck — was set to meet the barrier-loading requirements, not just look the part. We kept the spigots slim and low in number so the glass, not the metal, is what you see.

The result

A crystal-clear glass balustrade that guards the deck safely, meets the standards, and leaves the outlook completely open. Being a local job, it’s also one we can point to just around the corner — built the way we’d build our own.

Compliance note: Glass balustrades are built to the Australian glass standard AS1288 and the barrier-loading requirements of the National Construction Code. Where a deck or balcony also forms part of a pool barrier, the Queensland pool safety standard (MP3.4 / AS1926.1) applies as well — we set the job to meet whichever standards apply.
