What's the cheapest way to fence a pool?

Aluminium pool fencing is the cheapest way to fence a pool while staying fully compliant — it costs less than glass per metre and handles the coastal climate well. Glass costs more but gives you an uninterrupted view, which is why many Sunshine Coast homes run glass across the view and aluminium down the side boundaries.

“Cheapest” should never mean non-compliant, though. A bargain fence that fails a pool safety inspection costs you twice, so the real saving is getting it right the first time.

Does your pool fence meet Queensland's safety laws?

A pool fence is compliant when it’s built to Queensland’s pool safety standard, which calls up Australian Standard AS 1926.1 — the same rules whether the fence is glass, aluminium or steel. Get the height, the gaps, the non-climbable zone and the gate right, and the material is your choice.

How high does a pool fence need to be in Queensland?

At least 1,200mm, measured from finished ground level to the top of the barrier. The bottom gap is capped at 100mm, so the fence can’t be climbed under or stepped over.

This is the rule that ground levels quietly break — turf builds up, a garden bed is topped with soil, a new path is poured, and a fence that passed on install day drops under height. We set heights with that in mind.

PENALTIES

What's the fine for a non-compliant pool fence in QLD?

Queensland law requires every regulated pool to have a compliant barrier and to be listed on the state pool safety register, and fines apply for non-compliance. The penalty depends on the breach.

The part people miss: the barrier has to stay compliant. You’re required to maintain the fence and repair damage immediately — which is why a fence that was fine five years ago can quietly fall out of compliance.

CERTIFICATION

Do you need a pool safety certificate?

You need a valid pool safety certificate to sell or lease a property with a pool — valid for two years for a non-shared pool and one year for a shared pool.

New barrier work also has to meet the Queensland Development Code and may need approval through your building certifier. We install to the standard so your fence is ready to pass, and we’ll point you to a licensed inspector when it’s time to certify. We don’t issue the certificate ourselves — keeping the install and the inspection separate is the honest way to do it.

Do you use different glass for pool fences and balustrades?

Both use toughened safety glass, but the specification is different. A frameless glass pool fence is built to AS 1926.1, so panel size and placement are governed by the 1,200mm height and the 100mm gap rules. A glass balustrade is a structural barrier designed to AS 1288 and the National Construction Code, so glass thickness and fixings are chosen for the barrier height and the loads it has to carry. We spec each job separately rather than using one panel type for both.

What Australian Standard applies to glass pool fencing?

AS 1926.1 is the Australian Standard for pool barriers, called up in Queensland through the Queensland Development Code. It requires a barrier at least 1,200mm high, no gap greater than 100mm, a non-climbable zone of 900mm outside and 300mm inside the barrier, and a gate that is self-closing and self-latching from every position. Glass has to meet every one of those numbers, and the panels must be toughened safety glass.

Does glass pool fencing hold up in Sunshine Coast salt air?

Yes, provided the hardware is specified for the coast. The toughened glass itself is unaffected by salt, but spigots, hinges and latches are where coastal corrosion shows up first. We use marine-grade 316 stainless hardware on coastal installations, and rinsing the fixings with fresh water every few months keeps them and the glass clear.
